ABOUT THE PLAY

Ek Aise Gagan Ke Tale invites you into a world without money — where dignity is shared, skills are valued, and justice is a way of life. Through humour, imagination, and deep emotional truth, the play opens powerful questions about inequality, survival, and healing — all themes these young performers know intimately.

Ek Aise Gagan Ke Tale — a magical, transformative performance adapted from Badal Sircar’s Beyond the Land of Hattamala
Performed by 19 young boys from the Umerkhadi Observation and Children’s Home in Mumbai

Directed by Sapan Saran, this is not just theatre — it’s resistance, reflection, and rebirth.

WHY THIS MATTERS

These young actors are not professionals. They are children who have lived through abandonment, poverty, incarceration, and loss — yet on stage, they found their voice, their confidence, and the power of being seen differently.

In the audience were parents of these young actors sitting with pride as tears rolled down their cheeks; in the audience were judges who watched the boys with respect and hope; in the audience were strangers for whom an invisible section of society suddenly appeared shining under the spotlight!

“It felt good to be seen differently.”Jai*

It wasn’t just a play. It was a turning point — for the boys, for the audience, and for what we believe is possible within a Child Care Institution.

HOW IT BEGAN

This journey started as a quiet dream — when a short 15-minute skit titled Second Chance was performed by the boys at the Governor’s bungalow. That small moment created a huge shift in how the boys saw themselves.

With support from G5A, the dream grew into a full-scale production. Over four months of rehearsal, reflection, and improvisation, the boys poured their hearts into the play. They showed up — with hesitation, courage, rawness, and hope — and created something truly alive.

Their performance was met with standing ovations, teary eyes, and overflowing love. The boys answered the audience’s questions with grace and depth which stunned the room. The magic was undeniable.

“It gave us goosebumps.”
