I began doing arts-based therapy sessions at David Sassoon Industrial School for boys a few years ago, in the garb of it being a ‘drama class’. At first, I had very few boys attending the sessions, but I was very aware that many were lingering outside to guage what these sessions were about. After exchanging eye contact and a few words every now and then, over several sessions, children started crossing over and entering the space. Drama had won them over! A big thank you to Ashiyana which has always found ways past all the beauracracy, paperwork and organisational excuses to ensure these sessions took place. We even managed to get a theatre group come perform for the boys inside the premises! Never had I seen the boys laugh and smile the way they did that day. The Arts can change lives.”
